Laserdiscs
are the forerunner to the now extremely popular
DVD. They first appeared on the market in 1987
and about the same time as VCR's but without the
capacity to record video tape became king.
| The quality
of laserdisc was as high as DVD but the initial cost of buying the films was high,
sometimes as much as £60+ per film, and the cost of equipment to play and
listen to was beyond the budget of most people. A player and Dolby amplifier plus
speakers would set you down many thousands of pounds unlike todays DVD equipment
which is now being mass produced and is relatively inexpensive. Many
laserdiscs did have superior sound than most DVD's of today - its not compressed
and many films were produced with THX sound quality which is the standard used
on all Lucas Arts films i.e. Star Wars. Laserdiscs are no longer produced
with the last film being produced on this media, to our knowledge, was Star Wars:
The Phantom menace. They are now extremely rare as people have moved
their collections over to DVD and have now become a collectors item. All the items
that we have specially framed are unique and it is very rare that more than one
will ever be produced - keep them safe they can only increase in value. All framed
laserdiscs come with a certificate of authenticity, some also come with film cells
if available. Where possible the laserdiscs used are in mint condition
but some may be Near Mint (NR), Very Good (VG) or even good (G). They are rare
items and some over twenty five years old so condition may be classed as used
and show signs of 'wear and tear'. We will always state the condition of the item.
Once again these unique Laserdisc presentations are
